Comment on The SAT and College Apps by Ms. Mall https://campbell.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/2013/11/20/the-sat-and-college-apps/#comment-52 Wed, 20 Nov 2013 03:44:17 +0000 http://campbell.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/wpmu/?p=1736#comment-52 I would like to share one of the most interesting articles that I’ve read on the SAT (and the changes made to it nearly a decade ago). Here it is: http://www.economist.com/node/3739498

There was a time in US History that the SAT exam was used for good. Unfortunately, the revised SAT exam (particularly the mathematics portion) is more of an achievement test than an aptitude test.

We are getting more technology use in our district but you are right, we need more! There is a new committee working on making this a priority. The School Board (I’m VP) will be working with the Alaska Legislature to request technology funding this year. The best way to make that happen is to have students voices be heard. I’d encourage you to write to the Governor and State House and Senate Education Committees. Our Representative, Paul Seaton, is very supportive of techology, too. Let’s make it happen this year!

I’m glad someone took the time to write this wonderful review of such a milestone in our generations entertainment.

Comment on Is Spirit Week Losing Its Spirit? by Sierra Smith https://campbell.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/2012/04/25/is-spirit-week-losing-its-spirit/#comment-42 Sat, 28 Apr 2012 22:41:36 +0000 http://campbell.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/wpmu/?p=1116#comment-42 Is there any prizes for the best dressed?

These days are the same that we had when I was in high school. Perhaps there are some different days that would intrigue more people?

Spirit is shown with unity is what I hear you saying in this article. Does HHS have a twitter or facebook feed? Perhaps you start one with a question and students answer-have them come up with slogans or contests that can be announced at the end of the week pep rally. How can you make it most convenient for the whole student body to participate? Just assign colors to each day and wear the same color clothing?

Ask students who don’t dress up what would entice them to change their minds.

Good luck!

When I was at HHS AP Gov was offered, that was 6 years ago. It was cancelled due to budget cuts?

What are the differences between journalism class and a journalism club? Credits?

How could the community help this? Fundraise? Sell The Mariner Compass as a column to local papers? Sell it as its own paper to the community?

I have a lot of questions. I really like reading the articles you all write and I think having a venue for youth voice is an important necessity to a strong and healthy community.

Comment on Covering Homer During “Cover the Night” by Sierra Smith https://campbell.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/2012/04/27/covering-homer-during-cover-the-night/#comment-40 Sat, 28 Apr 2012 22:27:48 +0000 http://campbell.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/wpmu/?p=1154#comment-40 I really enjoyed this article. It is succinct and has meaningful quotes. I like how you ended with that quote and the selection of this story was tasteful. Perhaps you could have included a short summary of the issue, but perhaps your context clues were enough to understand. I found it interesting that many people in our community do not support this movement and that the phone calls were received. That would have been scary to me!

Good work to both the author and the activists!

But don’t be too quick to generalize your parents’ opinions to all of us tottering geezers. I haven’t read any of the books, and probably will not, but I enjoyed the movie and its hopeful ending, despite the dystopian futuristics.
